Why This Guide Exists

For over 20 years, NY Insurance Consultant has served businesses owned by Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs across Nassau County, Long Island, and the five boroughs of New York City. One of the most consistent observations: Hispanic business owners are frequently sold policies they do not fully understand — or worse, inadequate policies that leave their businesses exposed when a claim occurs.

This guide is written in plain language, by a bilingual broker, with one purpose: to make sure you understand exactly what you are buying and why you need it.

Coverage 1: General Liability (Responsabilidad General)

General liability insurance — GL — is the most fundamental commercial insurance coverage. It protects your business if a customer, vendor, or member of the public is injured at your premises or as a result of your business operations. Think of it this way: if a customer slips on the floor of your nail salon, or your cleaning crew accidentally damages a client property, or your contracting work causes water damage to a neighbor — GL is the coverage that pays the claim and defends you in a lawsuit. Most commercial landlords, many clients, and most government contracts require GL as a condition of doing business.

Cost: $500-$2,500 per year for most small businesses.

Coverage 2: Commercial Auto (Auto Comercial)

If any vehicle is used for business — driving to jobs, making deliveries, transporting equipment or goods — you need commercial auto insurance. Personal auto policies exclude business use. An accident while working with only a personal policy can result in a completely denied claim and personal liability for all damages. This applies to contractors driving to job sites in Nassau County, cleaning companies with employee vans, wholesale distributors with delivery vehicles, and landscapers with trucks and trailers.

Coverage 3: Workers Compensation (Compensacion de Trabajadores)

New York State requires workers compensation insurance for every business with employees — full-time, part-time, or seasonal. The penalties for non-compliance are $2,000 or more per 10-day period without coverage, plus personal liability for any worker injury costs. Workers comp pays for medical bills, lost wages, and rehabilitation for employees injured at work. If you have even one employee in New York, you need workers comp.

Coverage 4: Business Owners Policy (BOP)

A BOP bundles General Liability plus Commercial Property insurance plus Business Interruption coverage in one policy, typically at a lower cost than buying each piece separately. It is designed specifically for small businesses with under 100 employees and under $5 million in revenue — which describes the majority of Hispanic-owned businesses in Nassau County and NYC. For most small businesses — nail salons, bodegas, dry cleaners, restaurants, barbershops — a BOP is the single most cost-effective insurance structure.

Coverage 5: Commercial Umbrella (Paraguas Comercial)

A commercial umbrella policy provides additional liability coverage above the limits of your primary GL and auto policies. If your GL limit is $1 million and a lawsuit results in a $2 million judgment, your umbrella pays the difference. In New York — where lawsuits are common and juries are generous — standard GL limits are often insufficient for serious claims. A $1 million commercial umbrella adds roughly $500-$1,200 per year but dramatically increases your protection. It is essential for contractors doing NYC work, businesses with significant foot traffic, and any operation facing New York Labor Law exposure.
